VPN provider reviews. Personal. Independent. Tested. ✓

VPN services are now a standard tool for streaming or using torrents and downloads. But more and more people are also entrusting their general data to these providers to obtain a bit more privacy (VPN comparison for your online privacy is here).  Therefore, it is worth taking a critical look at the service providers and services. We are offering it to our readers!

Our VPN test results are based on comparable criteria and we integrate the experiences of our readers in all reviews. Therefore, we offer you the most comprehensive and independent overview of many providers on the market. We are the only VPN comparison portal that also visits the VPN providers personally at their company locations and offices, completely incorruptibly and at our own expense, and collects otherwise unknown background information in the process. Soon all our pages will also be available on the Internet under the name “VPNTESTER.ORG”.  Apart from that, you will also find some useful tools for security such as My IP address. The entire VPN Leak Test is also available on our site here.

Why should I trust your VPN tests?

We are academic mathematicians, computer scientists, sociologists, and scientists. In other words, we are not people who only run the website to earn commissions or revenue from advertising. We all work for a company that has been successful in the field of data security and digitalization for years and therefore also provides us with the time and financial resources to operate this website. Therefore, we guarantee that we provide the published information and the service completely independently of commissions, advertising, or other sources of income!

Bypass website blocking

For quite some time now, politics has required internet providers to block media content in our countries. Provided it is not forbidden content, this is primarily not aimed at protecting the population but against the possibility of a free formation of opinion.

The fact that the other media do not protest loudly against this also shows their true nature and mission. It is no longer a matter of preserving democratic framework conditions, but of deliberately and intentionally preventing the population from forming its own opinion!

We have put together several ways in which you can circumvent the barriers that have been put in place. This is not illegal, although only a small number of people will do this in reality. But we do encourage everyone who decides to form their own opinion and even offer free services financed by us so that everyone can continue to obtain the right to this free formation of opinion.

Streaming opportunities

Streaming also plays a role in VPN services. The ability to bypass geo-blocking opens up the opportunity to stream your favourite series and TV programs if you are in another country and do not have access to this content. On our website, you will find a lot of information about streaming and current events and how to access them when using a VPN. We regularly make a VPN comparison and test platforms with various VPN services.

Interviews with VPN providers

We are sure that personal interviews reveal the intentions of VPN providers. Since the choice of a VPN service is a question of trust, it is important to know the people involved better. With VPNTESTER OnTour we do exactly that and let our readers and viewers participate in our visits to the VPNs. You can find interviews with the VPN companies only on our VPN comparison site.

Questions from our readers, in person to the CEO of Surfshark!

We visited Surfshark VPN personally on 28 and 29 September 2021 in Vilnius, Lithuania. There we managed to interact freely with all employees (200+) and all departments.

The founder of Surfshark, Vytautas Kaziukonis, was also available every day for questions and answers. Among other things, we asked him personally the questions of our readers.

You can see his answers in the video.

NordVPN Interview with Marijus, the CTO

We met Marijus, the technical director of NordVPN in Lithuania, and had a conversation with him. We recorded a large part of it for our viewers. We also asked him questions from our readers personally in front of the camera, so that everyone can get an idea of the VPN service.

OVPN conversation with the founder

We visited OVPN, the provider from Sweden, in Stockholm. In some very long conversations, we were able to find out more about the founder of OVPN and his motives. The provider was the first on the market to use RAM disk in its servers and exclusively uses its hardware. An exceptional visit to a very transparent company that David Widbergh leads.

More videos of our visit to Sweden can also be found on our YouTube channel.

The VPNTESTER team.

We have a common goal, and that is to provide you with the best possible information about VPN providers and the possibilities they offer.  This means that we constantly revise our articles, and constantly repeat the tests (e.g. VPN speed test, every 2 weeks with each service, which is an essential part of VPN comparison). Our VPN comparison research does everything to make sure that our readers get all their questions answered.

That’s why you can reach us around the clock (unless we’re asleep, which rarely happens) and ask us questions, which we will answer personally and directly. We also help you directly by phone or with remote desktop tools to solve your problems.

Do we do all this for free?

If you appreciate our service, then you recommend it to others. We pay for every VPN access we use for testing and every tested router out of our pocket. You can also use the links we provide, and in some cases, our VPN comparison site receives a small one-time commission from some providers.

“Transparency” is critical to us, so don’t hesitate to ask us questions any time!

Frequently asked questions about VPN services

Some facts about VPN providers

Most often we hear from our readers that a certain provider surely does not “store log files”. In the vast majority of cases, however, this is complete nonsense. Even providers who do not store any log files but use “rented servers” are logged.

Many VPN tariffs are impossible WITHOUT log files!

In addition, doing without log files would already make them impossible for most VPN providers due to the tariff design. Every time a provider has a tariff that is limited in terms of time, data volume, or also for use on a limited number of devices or connections, this simply MUST create “log files” about the use. Otherwise, this would not be technically possible!

A “virtual private network” that transfers the data from your device to a VPN server, encrypted and no longer visible to third parties. All data moving between these two devices is transmitted securely.

When using a VPN connection, third-party access to your data is thus made impossible. This means that even your Internet provider, the network operator (school network, company network, etc.), or the local government can no longer see what you are doing on the Internet.

  • Bypass geographic locks
In addition, the Internet is used via the location of the VPN server. Therefore, it can also be used to effectively bypass geographical or local blocks that prevent access to content. This can make it possible to access content from other countries at home while travelling or on holiday.
  • Protection from hackers
The encrypted connection also prevents targeted “attacks” or “data theft”, which is why VPNs naturally also represent an important protection factor in foreign or public WLAN networks or other environments.
  • Hiding geolocation.
A VPN allows you to hide your geolocation, which can be monitored by intruders. All you have to do is choose a server located where you want it.

A VPN requires an internet connection

  • A VPN does not replace internet access.
The data transferred between the user’s device and a VPN server requires active internet access. VPN is not a substitute for an active internet connection but requires one.

VPN providers and VPNs in the company network

  • VPN is a transmission technology that enables the secure transport of data between two locations via the Internet. This is used by companies, organizations, and also governments in daily communication via the internet. Nevertheless, “commercial” VPN services are now also referred to as “VPNs” for short. These providers offer the same technology, but with the additional aim of “anonymizing” the use of the internet for third parties as much as possible.

This website is primarily concerned with these commercial VPN providers.

How does a VPN service work?

If you have an internet connection, you usually connect to the internet provider, who then connects you to the internet and websites and forwards your data, and sends the received data back to you. All your data communication will then be routed through your ISP’s server/router. This means that all your activities are traceable to this provider.

If you use a VPN service, you will establish another encrypted connection (also called a VPN tunnel) with a VPN server via the internet connection. This means that all data moving between your device and the VPN server is encrypted and no longer visible. Apart from you, only the VPN server can know this data. Your internet provider only sees the amount of data that is transferred between you and the VPN server. But no content.

This process has several effects:

  1. Your internet provider cannot see what you are doing on the internet. It cannot see this because the data is encrypted. It also no longer knows which websites you open or which other services you use on the internet. He only sees data that is encrypted and transmitted between the customer and a VPN server.
  2. This makes data retention or recording data that indicates usage behaviour impossible.
  3. For websites visited or services used, the user appears at the location of the VPN server.
  4. This makes it impossible to identify the user by IP address.

That is why we recommend you have a look at our best VPN lists so that you can see for yourself a clear VPN comparison, and determine what is best for you.
