Zenmate Review 2021
Zenmate VPN offers a strict no-logs policy. It is a simple and friendly service, which works well with streaming and bypasses geo-blocking! Zenmate free and Zenmate Premium is available. Read more about the service in my Zenmate review!
The young start-up company ZenMate VPN from Berlin offers a VPN based on the PPTP and OpenVPN protocol. In the meantime, the service has been sold to Kape Technologies from Israel. This is the same investor that also bought the CyberGhost VPN. Customer service is now offered in English for presumably cost reasons. So after you download Zenmate you have only the choice to deal with it in English.
The first consequences of the takeover by Kape Technologies
There were also some changes due to the takeover. Although since then no further investments in the expansion of further functions of the provider have been made. Probably, the service is now primarily used by the financial investor to generate profits from existing customer sales.

Privacy with ZenMate VPN
ZenMate offers some features that obscure identity. Connections are made via encrypted channels via proxies. These are relatively easy to lever out and the operating system and all installed programs or browser plugins can transmit your IP address and other personal data unencrypted. It is therefore roughly seen, only simple protection of one’s own identity is guaranteed.
Does ZenMate save log files?
Yes, it does! Every VPN service that offers tariffs that have a limitation (e.g. limited number of simultaneous connections, data transfer limit, etc.) must provide and manage central login management and thus logged data. The general terms and conditions provide information about common data transfer when requesting information.
Besides, the disclosure of the data in the terms and conditions is granted at one’s discretion or legal framework, even in the case of requests for information under civil law (warnings).
Anonymity with ZenMate
You can’t remain anonymous with ZenMate VPN, the payment methods require the disclosure of personal information that suggests the identity of the user. The Zenmate free version also offers no further protection against identification. The Zenmate premium version is better protected via native VPN, but the possible safeguards against attacks by VPN servers by third parties have not been published. The DNS services are determined from publicly available servers, which means that user activities can be intercepted and recorded there.
Anonymity with Zenmate VPN is only given to websites. Authorities and all other institutions can obtain the identity of the user through inquiries or the courts. When you download ZenMate you have to be clear about that!

Access to blocked content with ZenMate
Even the Zenmate free version allows access to blocked content in at least 4 countries. In the Zenmate premium version, you can select some European countries, the USA and others. In general, however, the live streaming of TV & video content is one of the strengths of the provider!

ZenMate Review: File sharing P2P with Zenmate VPN
I cannot recommend Zenmate VPN for file sharing! Firstly, no port forwarding is included and complete security is only provided in the Zenmate PREMIUM tariff. Server locations such as the EU, USA are of course to be avoided in any case. There also seem to be corresponding traffic blocks. The service also excludes this type of use in its terms and conditions.
ZenMate VPN is not recommended for torrent use/exchanges! So don’t download ZenMate if you are searching for a VPN for filesharing.

ZenMate VPN applications
You can use ZenMate VPN on almost all devices, it is worth noting that there are also ZenMate extensions for all common browsers. ZenMate extensions are available for Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and the Opera browser. What is not clear is that with the browser extensions ONLY the data that is sent or received via the browser uses the secure connections. All other applications communicate past it.
Encrypted virtual network connections to the individual locations are established via the classic VPN applications. The protocol used is “OpenVPN” which is also considered secure. ZenMate VPN applications are available for Android, Apple iOS, macOS and Windows. You can download ZenMate for all of these.
ZenMate also offers the data transfer to use the service on other devices such as game consoles, AppleTV or Amazon FireTV devices. There are also instructions on how to set them up, but the use is not as safe as intended.
|Available protocols||L2TP/IPSecOpenVPN (TCP)OpenVPN (UDP)PPTPSSL/Proxy|
|Own apps||AndroidApple iOSChrome extensionFirefox extensionMac OS XOpera extensionWindows|
The ZenMate extensions allow proxy use directly in the browser. They are simple and can also be installed quickly. The applications generally offer the advantage that data can be sent quickly about the location of the service and can also be changed quickly. However, there are also disadvantages, since other data that a device exchanges via the Internet is not redirected via the browser.
Use via DNS / proxy on other devices
ZenMate uses “proxy servers” for anonymization. Although these are a tried and tested means, they also mean, conversely, that users have to trust the provider 100%, as the provider can view and save all transmitted data. We, therefore, recommend that you do not use ZenMate VPN for the anonymous use of the Internet, but only for video and streaming tasks.
The risk from proxy servers
However, this also means that ZenMateVPN, as the operator of the proxy server, can view, save or even manipulate all the content of all data above it. Regular VPN services do not do this since this data merely “routes” and does not pretend to be a “down intermediate service” towards the data’s destinations.
VPN connections with OpenVPN
Also, the premium tariff of the provider makes it possible to establish classic VPN connections.
“OpenVPN” is primarily used. This VPN protocol is considered to be secure and all data of a connected device is also transmitted encrypted over this virtual network connection.
The PLUS of the provider is simple handling after you download ZenMate, which is realized via the simple installation on the PC / Mac or via the browser Zenmate extensions for Chrome and Firefox. There are no advanced settings that can or must be selected and you can be encrypted very quickly! Many users will like that. Zenmate extensions make life easier. The missing options, e.g. the encryption protocol used are of course a disadvantage when it comes to security.
Zenmate review – summary:
- Zenmate Chrome browser extension
- Zenmate Firefox browser extension
- Opera browser extension
- Apple iOS (iPhone / iPad)
- Mac OSX
The ad blocker (tracking protection) works flawlessly and is comparable in scope to the Ghostery ad blocker, but it does not offer any individual settings. These options are better solved at Ghostery.
The malware protection available at Zenmate is already integrated as standard in the Google Chrome Zenmate browser and can also be deactivated or activated in the browser settings.

Zenmate Review – Our Conclusion:
ZenMate attracts many users with its very simple usability. In direct comparison with other VPN services, however, the service only offers easy handling and relatively good speed with the premium tariff. There are also restrictions on file-sharing or other exchange sites. ZenMate is therefore only a good offer for really few users. It is possible to find better services available for less money. I recommend VyprVPN as a worthy alternative.
